However, BTS also need to comply with certain standards to ensure their quality and performance. One of these standards is IEC 60439-2, which specifies the particular requirements for busbar trunking systems (busways). This standard is part of the IEC 60439 series, which covers low-voltage switchgear and controlgear assemblies. The IEC 60439 series is currently being replaced by the new IEC 61439 series, which introduces some changes and improvements in the design verification and testing methods of electrical assemblies.

Scope and object of IEC 60439-2




The IEC 60439-2 standard applies to busbar trunking systems (BTS) and their accessories for feeding and distributing electrical power in low-voltage installations. The rated voltage of BTS should not exceed 1000 V AC (at frequencies not exceeding 1000 Hz) or 1500 V DC. The standard also applies to BTS that are designed to incorporate communication and/or control systems or intended to supply luminaires through tap-off units. However, it does not apply to supply track systems in accordance with IEC 60570.


The object of the standard is to state the characteristics of BTS and their components, to define the service conditions, construction requirements and test methods. The standard also provides information for the application, operation and maintenance of BTS.


Definitions and classifications of IEC 60439-2




The IEC 60439-2 standard defines some terms and concepts related to busbar trunking systems (BTS), such as:


  • Busbar trunking system (BTS): a set of electrical conductors enclosed in a metal casing that forms a rigid structural system with mechanical and electrical joints between units.



  • Feeder unit: a unit of BTS that connects the power source to the distribution system.



  • Distribution unit: a unit of BTS that distributes power to one or more tap-off units.



  • Tap-off unit: a unit of BTS that provides power to an outgoing circuit.



  • Bending unit: a unit of BTS that changes the direction of the system.



  • End unit: a unit of BTS that terminates the system.



  • Accessory: a device that is not an integral part of a BTS unit but is necessary for its installation or operation.



The standard also classifies BTS according to their degree of protection against contact with live parts and ingress of solid foreign objects or water. The degree of protection is indicated by an IP code according to IEC 60529. For example, IP54 means that the BTS is protected against dust and splashing water.


Requirements and tests of IEC 60439-2




The IEC 60439-2 standard specifies the requirements and tests for busbar trunking systems (BTS) in terms of:


  • Service conditions: these include the ambient temperature, humidity, altitude, pollution degree, shock and vibration that BTS should withstand.



  • Construction: these include the materials, dimensions, clearances, creepage distances, insulation, earthing, marking and documentation that BTS should comply with.



  • Performance: these include the rated current, voltage drop, power loss, short-circuit withstand strength, temperature rise, electromagnetic compatibility and mechanical strength that BTS should achieve.
